Promo-Review: She Laughs in Pink by Jessica Calla

SHE LAUGHS IN PINK  by Jessica Calla

Back Cover Blurb

Four years after her twin is murdered, Juliet Anderson still struggles with guilt, her parents, and her relationships. Two things keep her from falling into a deep, dark place—dancing and her best friend, Ben. So when Ben decides to play football for New Jersey University, Juliet doesn’t hesitate. She follows. Finally away from her past, there is nothing to stand in the way. Juliet will win Ben's heart.

Then she meets Ben's roommate, Chase.

On probation and hell-bent on adhering to a “new life plan,” aspiring artist Chase leaves his New York City home for New Jersey University and meets Juliet before even stepping foot on campus. For him, their connection is instant. She’s the most vibrant girl he's ever seen. Her colors explode on his canvas, and he's never been more inspired in his life.

Too bad she’s madly in love with his seemingly perfect, good guy roommate.

Carra's Review

She Laughs in Pink starts off with a bit of snarkiness from the female lead, Juliet, and a bit of flirting from the male lead, Chase. From there, we settle in to the characters heading off to college and all the temptations and pitfalls of school and relationships.

In addition to Chase and Juliet, we also get a cast of supporting characters from their dorm floor (who I'm assuming we'll see in future books of this series) who all have their own idiosyncrasies.  By the halfway point of the story, they all come across as a sort of dysfunctional family...but not in an entirely bad way.

There is a whole bunch of drama and angst with the Chase-Juliet-Ben craziness, and for me it all was wearing thin pretty quickly.  Juliet's indecisiveness was annoying to me, and I actually felt she acted too immature, especially with her being so determined to continue pursuing Ben even after he has told her more than once that he's not interested.

Another thing that I wasn't keen on was the casual drug use and underage alcohol consumption as if it is just a totally accepted thing by everyone.  For me, this is a turn off for a story, and for the characters in a story participating in these things.  I was having a hard enough time connecting to the characters without this aspect which made it even harder.

This was one of those stories I had to push through, and I had a hard time concentrating on it.  If you are a fan of new adult/college angst and indecision, She Laughs in Pink will probably be right up your alley...and everyone can use a fun dose of Chase in their lives.  For readers 18+ for language and sexual content.
